SS19 HOUSE

SS19 house

Located in Subang Jaya, this project involves the transformation of a typical 22′ × 80′ intermediate terrace house, a common residential typology within Malaysia’s suburban fabric. Rather than altering the original massing, the design preserves the recognizable silhouette of the existing house while introducing a new architectural identity through a carefully layered facade intervention.

Responding to the client’s request for a raw and industrial character, the proposal explores the use of ventilation blocks as a primary facade element. Beyond their aesthetic contribution, the blocks function as a breathable architectural skin—filtering daylight, encouraging passive airflow, and improving privacy within the dense terrace-house context. This porous layer creates depth between the street and the interior while redefining the relationship between enclosure and openness.

To complement the mineral quality of the ventilation blocks, timber elements are introduced strategically to soften the facade composition and provide warmth at the human scale. The contrast between raw masonry texture and natural timber grain establishes a balanced material dialogue that is both robust and domestic.

Within the constraints of an intermediate terrace condition, where side openings are limited and frontage becomes the primary architectural interface, the project focuses on transforming the street elevation as the main spatial and environmental device. The result is a renewed facade that maintains the house’s familiar form while giving it a contemporary industrial presence within the Subang Jaya neighborhood.
